A DPF regeneration involves the car altering the fuel injector timings whichin the exhaust temperature increasing to a point at which the build up of carbon should burn off.

The criteria of a regen is normally to do with temperature, if the DPF temp is high enough it will start a regen, our engines only regen for approx 20mins so I imagine BMW may be even shorter depending on soot level. Official quote from BMW on the DPF : "The diesel particle filter removes almost all soot particulates from the exhaust, and eliminates them by burning them within the filter.


The catalyst layer in the filter means they can regenerate without the need for fuel additives, resulting in better performance than can be achieved with the use of additives. Most DPFs are fitted close to the engine where the exhaust is hottest so that passive regeneration is more likely to work.
