And for a disappointingly large number of people, that’ll be the GLA – a five-seat crossover that’s all but guaranteed to sell well. Because nowadays everyone loves a crossover.
However, you don’t get leather seats as standard or an electric tailgate. Unlike its predecessor, which was little more than an A-Class with a smidgen more ground clearance, the new GLA is a genuinely stylish crossover SUV. It shares much of its underpinnings and interior with the entr.
This is a vastly superior vehicle that, straight out of the bag, feels like the star of the premium subcompact CUV class. On AMG Line “lowered comfort suspension” the GLA thumps through potholes and.

With the UK again not receiving the 382bhp ‘base’ variant, there’s only the GLA S, which extracts an extremely stout 416bhp from its 2. It’s the most powerful. The GLA has many similarities with the A-Class as, in essence, the GLA is a high-riding A-Class.

And a big bill – easily £35k, depending on version – for what is essentially a slightly elevated compact hatchback. This gives it impressive grip in the weather. Here was a small CUV with a reasonable price tag, a prestigious badge, and inoffensive driving manners – it was the Holy Grail.
The GLA may be perceived as a premium compact SUV, but this diesel engine doesn’t assist with this image as it’s not the most refined of units and it’s not as flexible as you would imagine an engine with a 168bhp power output would be. To prove the point to myself, if no-one else, I parked my test. Crucially, it’s taller, by a full 104mm, and slightly wider, meaning it shuns the hatchback-on-stilts look of the old car in favour of a more bespoke bodystyle.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Citroen CCactus 1. It feels and looks like an A-Class and you also sit quite low in the car, which considering the segment it’s in is quite strange.
