Removing a private plate

The vehicle’s original registration number is usually reassigned to it automatically when you take off a private number. If your application is successful you’ll be sent a V7retention. Private (personalised) number plates : Renew or replace your private. Online or via post, you’ll need to pay £to remove your private plate.

Older plates and shorter numbers tend to be worth more. Personalised number plate removal in the UK is pretty straightforward. There are a few basic rules. What to check before removal.


Give yourself enough time so that you can be sure your private plates are off the car by the end of the lease.

If you have the right to a private number that is not currently being used. If the registration is still showing on the V5C (log book) for the vehicle when it leaves your possession, you've also lost possession of the number plate as the V5C is essentially the proof that you own the registration.


You should do this before you dispose of the vehicle. When it comes time to remove your personalised number plate so the car displaying it can be sold or traded against another or even scrapped you basically have two options.


Before explaining these it is worthwhile pointing out that if you are trading in your car against another at a car dealership the car dealer will most likely be able to transfer your registration number from the old car to. Some stuck-on number plates can easily and quickly be removed. Place your fingers under the edge of the number plate and pull firmly but evenly.


This may be enough to unstick the plate.

I’ve got a car with a private plate I’d like to keep. Looking online I can remove the number place immediately and put it on retention - assigning the old number to the car. You will receive back a V7Certificate of Retention, and a new V5C showing a new registration for the vehicle (typically this will revert back to the registration that was on the car prior to the private plate ). You can then inform your insurer of the change and attach new plates to the vehicle that match the registration now showing on the V5C.


To put a number plate on retention – you must fill out a V3document following Option B. Note that you will have to pay £to retain your personalised number plate and you can only keep the plate on this document for a maximum of years. If you wish to hold the plate in retention for longer than this, you must renew and send off another V3document to DVLA as soon as the years.
